Farrier Training Program

Learn how to correctly shoe a horse. Hard work -- high pay!

Description:

Program consists of these five non-credit courses:

§      Equine Business Management, 32 hrs (Online class)

Students will learn the business side of the equine business.  Topics: forms of doing business, income tax considerations, develop a business plan, insurance considerations, liability issues, records, hobby versus a business, agreements and contracts.

§      Applied Anatomy and Selection, 32 hrs (Online class)

Students will learn the parts and functions of the different systems of the horse.  This will be a form-to-function class: looking at the effects of conformation on the performance of the horse. This is not a veterinary anatomy class, but is designed to give the layperson a good understanding of form-to-function selection.

§      Farrier Class, 40 hrs (On-site class)

Students will learn the parts and functions of the different systems of the horse.  Class is totally hands-on.  Students will learn to shoe horses correctly and how to balance the horse’s feet.

§      Independent Study, 40 hrs (Student site)

Students will shoe a minimum of 20 horses within six weeks after Farrier Class.   Logs and proof of shoeing must be presented to Instructor.

§      Farrier Certification, 8 hrs (On-site class)

Students will review and prep for the farrier certification test given at the end of the day.

Prerequisites:

§         Students must have a computer with internet  connection and email capabilities

§         Students must bring supplies to Farrier class (call the Corporate Education Center at 605-718-2410 current list).

§         Students must have access to horses for shoeing during independent study class.

Certificate of Training:

Students successfully completing this program will receive a non-credit training certificate from the Corporate Education Center at Western Dakota Tech:

Farrier Training Program

On-Site Classes:

   Global Equine Academy

     Beulah, Wyoming

Instructor:

Gene Miller has been a professional farrier and instructor for 30 years.  The onsite classes are held at his Wyoming ranch.  Class sizes are small, so students receive individual help.

Cost:       

§   $2,150 per person + supplies & books

            * Supplies (approx $500)

            * Books (approx $135)

§   To register, call the Corporate Education Center, 605-718-2410.

§   Pre-registration is required and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

§   Payment reserves enrollment.

§   Enrollment is limited.

§   Minimum enrollments required.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:

§   $150 drop fee for those who drop before 3pm February 16, 2007.

§   No refunds granted after February 16, 2007.
