WDT to honor students working on NASA project
At 9:15 a.m. Thursday, May 6, Western Dakota Tech and representatives of the NASA HUNCH project will honor the WDT and high school students involved in building a locker for the space program.
WDT invites the media to attend. The event will be held in the WDT Welding Manufacturing lab..
WDT has collaborated with NASA’s High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH) program. Western Dakota Tech and Central High School students have teamed up to make stowage lockers for the astronauts training at Johnson Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center. These lockers need to be milled on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to meet NASA’s specifications of thousandths of an inch tolerance.
Western Dakota Tech is the only school in South Dakota participating in the HUNCH program.
The HUNCH program’s mission is to inspire and engage students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics by providing students with projects that facilitate training of astronauts. Students and teachers engaged in HUNCH are invited to Johnson Space Center (JSC) for an awards assembly and VIP tour of JSC each spring. For more information on HUNCH, please go to www.nasahunch.com.
Western Dakota Tech is the only technical institute that serves the western South Dakota region. WDT offers more than 20 programs in a variety of fields, including Business and Computers, Construction Trades, Health Services, Legal and Public Services, Manufacturing and Mechanical Trades, and Science and Technology. More than 94 percent of WDT graduates are placed in careers within six months of graduation, and more than 82 percent live and work in South Dakota.
WDT faculty, staff, and administration focus their efforts on helping students gain the skills and experiences they need to succeed. Through hands-on learning, internships, and industry partnerships, WDT students graduate ready to make a real and immediate contribution to their employers and to their communities.
