HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
Expires: November 30, 2020HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC The mechanic performs a variety of activities designed to service, repair, and maintain company owned equipment. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge and specific certifications that denote expertise in heavy equipment maintenance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment. Safely operate and maintain equipment. Diagnoses and repairs heavy equipment according to company needs. Troubleshoots mechanical defects accurately and make necessary repairs to equipment in a timely manner. Maintains complete work records. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance of all company owned vehicles and equipment. Prepares work orders and cost materials estimates Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition. Interacts with vehicle/equipment operators to help determine service and repair needs.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP Mechanics are under the direct control of the shop manager.
Educational Requirements Required: High School, Diploma or G.E.D. Preferred: Diesel Mechanic Certification Experience Requirements Minimum 1 year experience in heavy equipment repair.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Mathematical abilities at the level required to perform basic measurements and calculations. Fluency in the English language (read, write and speak) Must be “alert” and aware of surroundings Modern principles, practices, equipment, materials and tools used in the servicing, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. Must use the skill of active learning by understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem solving and decision making. Must have the skill to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
Physical Requirements Must be able to sit, stand, kneel and climb for extended periods of time Body movements: Walking, turning, stooping and reaching for and carrying materials, stepping over/around obstacles. Body sense: Must hear well enough to understand oral directions. Must see to read forms, labels, directions, prints and specifications. Must be able to consistently get into and out of heavy earth-moving equipment, most of which is elevated well above ground level. The ability to grasp, manipulate, and control levers, pedals, steering wheels, and switches on heavy earth-moving equipment. Must be able to consistently lift a minimum of 75lbs dead weight
Licensing Requirements Required: Valid Class A CDL (or willing to acquire within 30 days)
Tool Requirements Each Mechanic must provide own tools relevant to the work being completed. PPE Requirements Leather Work Boots Provided by Lind-Exco: Gloves Safety Glasses Hard Hat Safety Vest Ear Plugs
WORKING CONDITIONS This position works at a variety of job sites. Travel to and from sites may be in extreme weather conditions. A majority of the day will be spent working in or near various pieces and types of heavy earth moving equipment commonly used in the excavation/construction industry. This will often involve being exposed to the smell of diesel exhaust fumes and may involve being exposed to hot and cold outdoor weather, dusty and dirty conditions on job sites. The normal workday will be from 8 to 12 hours. The hours may be longer during peak construction seasons. Weekend work may be necessary.
