Governance

The South Dakota postsecondary vocational education system was conceived through the 1963 Vocational Education Act and subsequent state legislation. Western Dakota Tech is one of four technical colleges in South Dakota; it operates under a dual governance system. Tuition and state fees, program approval, and bonding issues are decided by the South Dakota Board of Technical Education. The Western Dakota Technical College Board of Trustees has the fiduciary responsibility of the college and oversees the policy, local fees, and hiring and evaluation of the Western Dakota Tech (WDT) president. The WDT President reports to the WDT Board of Trustees.

The state Board of Technical Education members are appointed by the Governor. The Western Dakota Technical College Board of Trustees includes two members of the Rapid City Area Schools Board. The seven other board seats are filled via recommendation for appointment or re-appointment by the Western Darkota Technical College Vetting Committee and presented to the WDT Board no later than the regularly scheduled meeting in May of each year. Agendas and minutes of both WDT and state board meetings are available for public review and all meetings are open to the public. The WDT Board of Trustees meets monthly on the campus of Western Dakota Technical College.
