Governance

The South Dakota postsecondary vocational education system was conceived through the 1963 Vocational Education Act and subsequent state legislation. Western Dakota Technical College (WDTC) is one of four technical colleges in South Dakota; it operates under a dual governance system. Tuition and state fees, program approval, and bonding issues are decided by the South Dakota Board of Technical Education. The Western Dakota Technical College Board of Trustees has the fiduciary responsibility of the college and oversees the policy, local fees, and hiring and evaluation of the WDTC President. The WDTC President reports to the WDTC Board of Trustees.

The WDTC Board of Trustee Board seats are filled via recommendations for appointment or re-appointment by the Western Dakota Technical College Vetting Committee and presented to the WDTC Board no later than the regularly scheduled meeting in May of each year. Agendas and minutes of the WDTC Board meetings are available for public review, and all meetings are open to the public. The WDTC Board of Trustees meets monthly, typically on the campus of Western Dakota Technical College, but also may take place in other locations in the region, according to Board schedules.
