Degree Description

Students in radiologic technology acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to utilize radiation in disease diagnosis under the supervision of a physician. This program integrates academic learning with practical instruction, laboratory work, and supervised clinical training to equip students for careers a radiologic technologists. This program is a comprehensive competency-based curriculum that will prepare students to enter the career in medical imaging and further their education and skills into advanced modalities in medical imaging.  Coursework covers patient care, radiographic anatomy and positioning, radiation safety and effects, X-ray generation, radiographic pathology, and advancements in X-ray technology. Students also gain practical experience in patient care, problem-solving, and effective communication within healthcare teams.

Western Dakota Technical College Radiologic Technology Program is currently accredited under the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) under Regional Accreditation and is recognized by the  American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).  For more information about accreditation, visit the WDTC Accreditation page.  Currently, the program is applying for programmatic accreditation under the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and the program is under review.

Application Process

1. Apply to WDTC

    1. Complete Western Dakota Technical College Admissions Application
    2. Complete the ACCUPLACER test ($15 fee)
    3. Schedule your Admissions Advising Session
    4. Provide an official copy of a High School transcript or GED scores. If you graduated from an international high school, you must submit your transcript to Educational Credential
    5. Evaluators to determine U.S. equivalence.
    6. Submit Immunization Records verifying two doses of MMR vaccinations.
Once you receive your acceptance letter, schedule a time to register for classes.

The ACCUPLACER test will be waived if you have an ACT sub-score of 18 or better in English, Math, and Reading.
To waive the ACCUPLACER with SAT scores a student will need a 500 on the MATH subsection of ACT and a composite of 970 to waive Writing and Reading. To place into MATH 114 a student will need a 520 on the MATH subsection.

2. Application Instructions

The application process opens the first Monday in December and closes the last Friday of the following year at 11:59 pm (MST). Example: December 2nd, 2026 - January 29th, 2027.

  1. Applicants must be a student of WDTC to apply for the Radiologic Technology Program.
    1. Visit wdt.edu to apply to WDTC and follow the requirements in the application.
  2. The application for the WDTC Radiologic Technology Program will be located on the WDTC Radiologic Technology Program page.
    1. Click on the Radiologic Technology Application to access the current application tab.
      1. The tab will only be active during the current application period.
    2. All components of the application must be complete before 11:59 pm (MST) to be considered for acceptance into the program.
      1. This includes the uploading and approval of all vaccinations into CastleBranch.
      2. Incomplete applications will not be considered for the technical component of the program. No exceptions will be allowed.
      3. Please refer to your WDTC Radiologic Technology Program Checklist for the complete list of requirements.
      4. Complete applications will be reviewed, points will be assigned, and the top-ranking candidates will be selected.
      5. All applicants will receive written notification of their final admission status (acceptance, alternate status, or rejection) no later than March 20.

3. Technical Cohort Application

Application opens Tuesday, December 1, 2026.
Students will be ranked based on their total scores, as determined by the program’s scoring template. The 20 students with the highest scores will be accepted into the technical component of the program. The next four highest-scoring students will be designated as alternates.

Note: If you are or have been convicted, pleaded guilty or no contest to, or received a suspended imposition of sentence for a felony or certain misdemeanors, you are advised that you may not be able to complete all course requirements for your chosen program, you may be prevented from taking required certification/licensure examinations in your chosen program field, and you may be prevented from gaining employment in your program field. If you are not a resident in the state of South Dakota, please be aware that licensing requirements vary from state to state. It is your responsibility to determine if your Radiologic Technology testing results and status are valid in your state of residence, or the state in which you plan to practice in. Students that sit out for a spring or fall semester or longer, will return under a new Catalog and may be required to repeat courses or successfully complete new or revised skills or competency assessments. Before readmittance, the program will determine if a student is eligible to continue technical courses or if reapplication to the program is required. This is a competitive program, and the top-ranking candidates are selected. The cohort size is limited by the number of clinical opportunities available and recognized by the JRCERT.

Clinical Obligations: 

Clinicals, practicums, and internships may include, but are not limited to, differential shifts (evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays) to meet industry expectations. Students are required to travel, and the distance may be up to 150 miles. The markets include the Rapid City Market, Spearfish Market, and Gillette, Wy Market and the cost of travel is at the student’s expense.

Market selection for students starts with student preference. The top-ranked students will get their first choice. If a market fills, then other markets will be filled by looking at the student’s home address and rank. There is a high probability that a student will not receive the market of their choice.

Other obligations include passing a background check and drug test. There are also vaccination requirements for this program. Please refer to your WDTC Radiologic Technology Program checklist.

Radiology involves the application of radiation to create detailed images of bones, organs, tissues, and vessels within the human body. The accuracy and clarity of these images are crucial for diagnosing and treating patients. The Radiologic Technology Program teaches you to blend technological expertise with compassionate patient care in healthcare settings. Apart from the radiology department, you'll gain experience in diverse areas like emergency rooms, intensive care units, surgical suites, outpatient imaging centers, and doctor’s offices. Graduates can choose to train in advanced modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, and bone densitometry.

Licensure and Certification


Steps for Credentials

Professional licensure and certification requirements often vary from state to state. WDTC will not initially enroll students in an academic program leading to professional licensure or certification unless the College has confirmed the program meets all educational requirements of the state where the student is located, per WDTC’s Student Location policy, or intends to work after graduation.

Radiologic technologists constitute the third-largest group of healthcare professionals, following physicians and nurses.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2024, the average wage in South Dakota was $66,320.

Finding affordable housing during school can be a challenge for students. Western Dakota Technical College currently does not have on-campus housing, but partners with a Rapid City VRBO to offer a limited number of apartments for full-time students in the fall and spring semesters.
