And … we’re off!

As you know, the Higher Learning Commission accepted our application to participate in the Commission’s Assessment Academy. Kelly Oehlerking, Justin Jutting, and Tami Dewes traveled to Chicago Sept. 7, 2016, for an initial planning meeting.

In October, the entire Academy team will go to Chicago for the first of multiple trip during the next four years. The team includes Kelly, Justin, Tami, James Loverich, Tiffany Howe, Mandy Hertel, Duane Martenson, and Mark McGrath.

According to the Commission, “the Assessment Academy is tailored for institutions interested in developing an ongoing commitment to assessing and improving student learning. The Assessment Academy offers each institution personalized guidance in gathering the necessary information and data to survey student learning outcomes, determining goals that should be set for the institution regarding those outcomes, and developing and implementing strategies to achieve those goals.

“The Assessment Academy provides institutions with new ideas and techniques for influencing institutional culture, improving the assessment of student learning and increasing institutional capacity to complete those assessments. Institutions develop a process to regularly test and document effective practices in assessing and improving student learning.”

Participating in the Academy is important for us because, as you know, issues with assessment of student learning are part of the reason we are on probation. We have revitalized our assessment practices to align with HLC expectations, and the Academy will provide additional ideas about how we can be even better.
